What is the Electric Car Grant and How to use it?
The Electric car grant is part of the UK Governments ‘Plan for Change’ whch aims to help households save money and accelerate the switch to greener/zero-emission cars. The UK car buyers can claim the discount of up to £3,750 on new electric vehicles below £37,000.
With the £650m allocated in the budget, the grant could potencially subsidise around 173,000 electric cars at the full £3,750 discount which roughly half the number of EVs purchased in the UK last year in 2024. The Electric Car Grant (ECG) will run until the 2028/29 financial year, helping thousands of drivers get behind the wheel of cheaper electric cars and help to reduce the emissions across the UK.
There are two levels of support that the Governement is going to provide. The greenest models qualify for the full £3,750 discount, while cars that don’t quite meet the highest eco-standards still get £1,500 off.
Some manufactures have already started to discount their cars before annoucement of the grant. instead of waiting around for a decision, brands such as Great Wall Motors and MG have gone ahead and launched their own discounts that match the grant. MG has annouced up to £1,500 off selected models across their range such as the MG S5 and the MG4.
