The UK has one of the largest public charging networks in Europe, with over 17,000 chargepoint connectors available. There are now more public charge points in the UK than there are petrol stations, which should give you some confidence regarding making those longer trips. There are different types of charger available, to suit differing requirements.

Fast EV Charging

Fast Chargers

Fast EV chargers, often classed as Type 2 AC chargers offer charging rates between 7kW and 22kW. This means you can charge your electric car in less than 8 hours. In public, you can find these in locations such as hotels, car parks and shopping centres.

The vast majority are “untethered” - meaning you'll need to provide your own charging cable to use them.

Rapid EV Charger

Rapid Chargers

Rapid EV chargers, also known as DC fast chargers, provide high power outputs, typically ranging from 50 kW to 150 kW, enabling electric vehicles to recharge significantly faster than standard chargers. They can typically deliver 80% charge in 30 minutes or less, making them ideal for quick stops during long trips. Rapid chargers are commonly found at public charging stations along motorways and in urban areas.

Rapid Chargers have fixed connector cables - meaning you won't need to bring your own.

Ultra Rapid Chargers

Ultra-rapid EV chargers are the fastest charging stations available, offering power outputs from 150 kW up to 350 kW. They can charge electric vehicles to 80% in as little as 15-30 minutes, making them ideal for long-distance travel. Typically located at high-traffic public charging hubs, they support the latest EV models and advanced battery technologies for quick turnaround.

How much does it cost?

The cost to charge an EV in public in the UK can vary significantly depending on several factors:

  1. Charging Rate: Most public charging stations charge by the kilowatt-hour (kWh). Prices can range from £0.20 to £0.70 per kWh, depending on the provider and the charging speed.

    • Slow/Fast Chargers: Current average is 56p/kWh
    • Rapid and Ultra-Rapid Chargers: Current average is 80p/kWh
  2. Session Fees: Some networks impose a flat fee for using the charger, which can range from £1 to £5, depending on the service provider.
  3. Membership Discounts: Many charging networks offer membership plans that can lower costs. Members might enjoy reduced per-kWh rates or waived session fees.
  4. Time-of-Use Pricing: Certain networks implement variable pricing based on the time of day, charging higher rates during peak hours and lower rates during off-peak times.
  5. Idle Fees: To prevent vehicles from blocking chargers after they’ve finished charging, some providers charge idle fees. This can be around £1 to £5 per hour for cars left connected after charging is complete.
