Class 7 MOT

The Class 7 MOT is for light commercial goods vehicles weighing between 3 and 3.5 tonnes.

Vehicles over 3 years old need annual MOT testing to verify road safety. The Class 4 test applies to personal cars and small vans, while light commercial vehicles between 3 and 3.5 tonnes require a Class 7 test. Note that the Class 4 category also includes motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes.

What is a Class 7 MOT check?

A Class 7 MOT is mandatory for commercial vehicles weighing between 3,000kg and 3,500kg, while cars and lighter vans used for commercial purposes require a Class 4 MOT. Check your vehicle handbook or V5 registration document if you're unsure which test applies.

The Class 7 MOT tests are comparable to those in a Class 4 MOT but are more thorough due to the vehicle size. It includes additional checks on tyre suitability for extra weight and enhanced brake efficiency tests for safety.

What documents do I need to bring?

If this is your vehicle's very first MOT, you'll need to bring along the V5C vehicle registration certificate (the log book) when you visit our garage. This document is also necessary if your vehicle has had a change of registration plate since its last MOT. In most other situations, you won't need to bring any additional documentation for the MOT.

For everyone's safety, we appreciate it if you could remove as much weight as possible from the vehicle before bringing it in for the MOT. This helps to ensure the ramps aren't overloaded and can also prevent any issues that might lead to a failed MOT due to excess weight.

The tests done in a Class 7 MOT are quite similar to those in a Class 4 MOT, but they go a bit deeper for larger vehicles. You'll find extra checks in a Class 7 test, including assessments of whether the tyres can handle the additional weight and efficiency tests for the brakes to ensure added safety.
